“POTENTIAL”
TV : 60 /30 PSA Alan L. Foote
INT : Elementary School Band Room / MORNING
The room is comfortable and accommodating. Large windows all the morning
light to fill the room. 30 youngsters sit 'band-style', each with his or her own instrument. It's obvious each child is a novice. Personalities of the children are presented by their comical innocence, juxtaposed to their lack of understanding of their individual instruments.
VARIOUS SHOTS
The youngsters endeavoring to tune their instrument – a YOUNG BOY can't
quite get the hang of piercing his lips to blow into his trumpet – a YOUNG GIRL struggling with her dexterity as she holds her violin – a very YOUNG PERCUSSIONIST is all over the place as he tries to 'find a beat.' The NOISE is awkward, out of tune.
A seasoned, “MR. CHIPS” ind of a MUSIC TEACHER enters the room and takes
his place in front of the inexperienced class.
VO
To all teachers who have given and continue
to give even the smallest of effort to
enlighten and educate the world's children . . .
STUDENTS' reactions to the teacher
The TEACHER survey's his class.
TEACHER
Shall we?
The class comes slowly to attention as best they can with their awkward instruments.
The TEACHER lifts his BATON and on the 'down-beat.'
Behind and above the TEACHER we see the class as the MUSIC begins. It is
difficult to tell what the kids are playing in their collective SCREECHING and
DISHARMONY.
VO cont
. . all mankind say's 'Thank You'
for your vision and dedication.
From behind the young class we PUSH into THE TEACHER. The MUSIC suddenly
changes from the SCREECH and DISHARMONY to heavenly strains of 'YOU ARE THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS – MUSIC ONLY – NO VOCAL. He smiles . . . he is
really enjoying this. Yes, REALLY!
As CAMERA PUSHES CLOSER, the expression of the TEACHER is that of AWE and WONDER. What he's hearing is exquisite.
VO cont
. . . the light of hope is fueled
by your sacrifices.
DISSOLVE TO
From a CRANE behind the TEACHER we swoop down to see the CLASS -
they are no longer inexperienced children. Instead they are 25-30 year old
PROFESSIONALS. Still they play THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS even more
beautifully. (This is a 'flash forward' to show the way the teacher sees and hears these students in their future – the gift he is imparting to each of them).
VARIOUS SHOTS
OLDER PLAYERS – we see their maturity and professionalism.
VO cont
Good people everywhere give thanks to
teachers for seeing our children, not as
they are, but as they can be.
TEACHER. He is affected emotionally by hearing such grand music . . . so
proud . . . so much faith in his student's futures.
DOUBLE CROSS FADE TO CU OLD TEACHER as we hear the fading strains of the MUSIC and then hear a VOCAL TAG - ' DID YOU EVER KNOW THAT YOU'RE MY HERO.” MUSIC FADES into the screeching and DISHARMONY. Still the teacher smiles proudly.
